Basic Navigation and Safety
We recommend if you are a novice with a power boat , sailing dinghy or a yacht you consider taking a practical course on Basic Navigation and Safety.
The course is normally taught over 16 hours with exercises to complete along the way. It can be covered as a series of short sessions or over two full days.

buoyage
tidal awareness
visual and electronic navigation
pilotage
rules of the road
anchoring
weather forecasts
passage planning
Day Skipper
The course is taught over 40 hours with two exam papers. It can be covered as a series of short sessions, as an intensive week-long course, or by distance learning.

- the basics of seamanship
the essentials of coastal navigation and pilotage
chartwork
electronic charts
position fixing
plotting a course to steer
weather forecasting and meteorology
tides
collision regulations
construction, parts and equipment of a cruising boat
emergency and safety procedures including distress calls,use of flares, safety harnesses, lifejackets and liferafts

Be aware of tides, wind and weather conditions. Check the weather forecast so you can be prepared for whatever the weather might bring. Be sure to bring along adequate provisions, clothing and basic weather gear as needed. Boating and sailing basics means always being prepared.
Sailors ahould practise who are able to adjust sail settings to take the best advantage of different wind and water conditions. In general, sails should be relatively flat when the wind is either very light or very strong, and full when there is a moderate wind.
Man Overboard — Do not panic!
Capsize on purpose. This may seem like one of the oddest beginner sailing tips we could suggest, but it’s better to practice how to handle a capsized sailboat within a controlled environment, as opposed to an uncontrolled one. Be attentive and be alert at all times look out for debris floating in the water
When start sailing consider joining a sailing club it saves you buying your own dinghy and you can benefit from folk who can teach you the basics Sailing dinghies and on how effectively and learning the terminology that goes with it.
Check the weather at your destination before you sail, and be ready to change your schedule. Also keep in mind that you may change your route halfway

A hand held vhf radio is recommended if adventuring out to sea to communicate ifyou get in distress.
A sailing dingy is a great small boat but has remember it has limitation and is a basically a day boat but is indeed a great intoduction to sailing and is a relatively inexpensive way to get on the water.
