advice on a boat anchor?
My cruiser has a 30ft anchor winch. approximately 20 feet of chain and 150 ft of rope. I sounder also give me a reading of depth. My windlass NOT freefall. So how do I know when the anchor hit the bottom? In other how to string words the depth that I am? Ideas? advice? OKAY I want to say … How do I know when the anchor hit bottom too? Please do not reply if you do not answer the question I posed.
I think Yankee sailor is entitled, however … Person has suggested that you check your chart to see if the substance you intend to hang in is disgusting! Have a crewperson feel after the Rode keep to 5-7 times the water depth (plus freeboard between the roller and anchor surface), to see if it bounces when you turn the ship moderately reverse to set the hook. If no bounce / jump is detected, you are indeed hooked. Then go backwards with the aim of ensuring that you will not get the hook out of the bottom during the night. Taking bearings of all trees, houses, points of land to ensure you do not drift! Good Luck
