Carl Kiekhaefer had never planned to have something to do with outboard motors which he graduated in engineering from the University. His original plan was to design and manufacture magnetic separators for use in the dairy industry. He bought a failure of outboard motor Cedarburg company with the financial support of his father with the intention to use the premises to produce its magnetic separators. When he bought the company has also got 300 outboard engines, which were considered rejects as they had flaws and would not be executed.
Being an engineer and needing money Carl decided to examine the engines and see if they could be repaired and sold. After past them, he started working with his small team of workers and all repaired and contacted the original buyer had rejected them. The order had been with a company mail and they agreed to take the engines Carl now they were at work and sell. Carl saw the outboards as a way to get money quickly in a company called the Company Kiekhaefer at this time. But when the company mail order called to order more engines because they were popular and reliable and a second company showed interest in engines and requested another engine of an alternate firing twin model to be designed and built for them, he had to revise his plans. Carl decided at this point in 1939 to improve the design of the outboard motor and manufacture of machinery instead of dairy.
Carl has worked the design of its own brand of motors taking account of all the things that were inaccurate and unreliable with outboard motors that were already available at that time. His plan was to introduce its first range of engines so that they are superior in power and reliability that everything that is currently available. He developed a rotor pump water resisted dealing with mud and vegetation by making parts of it from rubber and a housing to protect the drive shaft and exhaust. The first fuel system using a valve was also incorporated in the new engine and were ready to be introduced in 1940 as the range Mercury after the Roman messenger of the gods. The New York Boat Show in 1940 where He presented his outboard to the public and to distributors for the first time and took 16,000 orders for engines at the fair one.
As the company has started really well for the Second World War stopped all production of outboard engines and Carl pushed to win a government contract to provide chainsaws for the army. The army has tried to develop a more portable version to replace those currently used and Carl was sure he could beat their design. Two months was enough to have a prototype designed and built, and a practical test that could cut in chainsaw through a newspaper 24inch could determine whether military or Carl would get the contract. His machine to beat the army of only 35 seconds, taking only 17 seconds to cut wood and has won the contract and ensure survival of the business by the war. Immediately after the war the production of outboard engines restarted and grew up boating began to understand as a hobby.
Today Mercury produces a range of outboard engines very high level in up to 300 horsepower with inboard engines and jet drives.
