There is no bike on the road that resembles a Harley-Davidson. Over centuries, the manufacturer long history, the look of the Harley has changed and fans true can tell the year of a bike at a glance. One of the most obvious clues is the distinctive Harley engine.

Since twenty years, Harleys got their look from the Shovelhead engine, the engine that many people even today automatically associate with the bike.

The end of the Panhead

In the mid-1960s, used Harley Davidson Panhead engine, so called because the shape of the rocker covers. Like most bikes is heavy they needed more engine power than the Panhead could give them. In 1966, Harley introduced the next evolution of this engine design.

The new engine, like its predecessor, takes its name from the shape of the rocker covers. The covers are shaped shovels coal and these pieces inspired Shovelhead the name of the engine's Shovelhead.

The Shovelhead was more powerful cylinders and pistons, and aims to provide a surge capacity for meet the demands of riders of the day.

The engine had its drawbacks. It is more powerful but also heavier so do not give as much power as had hoped. This weight also affected the conduct of the bike and could lead to build up a gear.

Some of these shortcomings were because it was not originally designed as a motorcycle engine. It was supposed to be used in an engine outboard, but engineers discovered that it did not work well in humid environments, which is rather a major drawback for an engine Marine.

The Shovelhead Era

Although the Shovelhead was not perfect, it still provided plenty of power for the new generation Bicycle.

Harley continued to improve the engine throughout its life. In the 1970s, there were a number of changes to design parts Shovelhead has settled numerous complaints from consumers about its performance.

However, the engine never became what bikers wanted it to be. Some reasons for this are government regulations that came out of the energy crisis of the 1970s. Harley was limited as to how much power they could improve the engine.

A real improvement in public areas was Shovelhead Electra Glide FLH – Pack, also known as the Font option. Although this option makes the bike more difficult for the amateur to maneuver, a qualified pilot can more power and speed.

The end of the Shovelhead

Despite efforts of Harley, the engine struggled to keep pace with innovations that blows Industry. Shovelhead parts such as systems management oils were considered archaic compared to other engines and aircraft fell into disgrace.

Harley stopped producing the engine in 1984, although manufacturers are still the engines of custom in the same style. The Shovelhead been replaced by the Evolution engine Harleys still using today.
