Ancient alchemists seeking a formula to turn lead into gold
not stopped, even if the ingredients are updated periodically.
These days the attention of home-grown inventors living on fantasy
potential fuel vehicles – how to do it from a resource such abundant
as water, or how to obtain a tenfold increase in the energy business
valuable substance.
The research seems a little closer as a result of an event
Congress last week with a modified diesel car that gets 84 miles a
No. 2 gallon of oil.
It was a diversion of Ohio, Senator Howard Metzenbaum has something
About Companies oil. He asked the inventors and Michael Ralph Moody Shetley
to drive their "Moodymobile" Oak Hill, Florida, Washington, 11.5
gallons of diesel fuel.
The distance of 840 miles prepares to 73 miles per gallon – less than
vaunted but still impressive. Inventors working on a model they
expect plans to produce 140 MPG.
Rudolf Diesel would have been proud!
The inventor German was himself something of an off-beat genius. His
objective was to capture in a internal combustion engine power locked
place in coal dust.
When he began his first engine of coal dust exploded with such
force it destroyed the laboratory and about Diesel.
Diesel was delighted. Now he knew he could release enormous energy.
However, he went to the oil that could be more easily controlled by
simple steel then available.
The diesel engine is potentially more efficient because it has worked to
higher temperatures and pressures. It could be adjusted to approximately
Fuel fuel, but the engine has been ignored for two decades because
gasoline was so plentiful.
In 1913, the First World War arms race roared Along. Germany
France, Britain and the United States are interested in diesel
engine for ships war.
While negotiating with various governments, Diesel boarded a ship
cross the English Channel and meet the Admiralty UK. He never
reached shore. During the trip, he disappeared from his cabin.
Murder? Suicide? Accident? History has no clues. It was assumed
that German agents inventor cast overboard in the belief
Diesel was about to sell his engine to the Allies.
The sensational death of Diesel was the first source of inspiration for many
stories about frustrated inventors energy improvements.
According to popular theory, some fans discovered an engine or fuel
that threatens the establishment existing power. The Mighty Moguls
the automobile industry or the oil industry to buy the invention to keep
off the market, or have deleted the unfortunate inventor refuses to
play ball.
The most famous of these stories involves John Andrews, an inventor
McKeesport, Pa., who once convinced the U.S. Navy, he could turn water
fuel.
It drove a Packard automobile in New York court in 1916 just a Marine
few months before America declared war on Germany. With him was John
Carney, a Pennsylvania banker who had encouraged Andrews. They said
they had already done all the way to Philadelphia on water and chemicals secret.
Skeptical but intrigued, the Navy has asked Andrews to demonstrate
claim with a motor boat motor.
Andrews has produced one gallons empty can and asked the court of the elder
Engineer to make a bucket of water tap. The inventor has turned
return on observers and busied himself with chemicals from his bag.
Soon he turned and handed the can, now half filled with liquid, and
and half a bucket of water.
The contents of two containers were been paid in the fuel tank of the engine.
Finally, Andrews has produced a small vial of green liquid from his jacket
pocket, tossed six or seven drops into the mix and started the engine.
The engine sputtered at first, but Andrews adjusted the carburetor and
the engine ran smoothly at 75 per cent of the rated power until the fuel was
consumed.
Impressed, Navy Andrews invited back the next day for more
rigorous test. This time they forced him to make his preparations
a small room without furniture or the drain hose, and they gave him a bucket
seawater to work.
The results were the same as the eve.
A large demonstration was organized for the Secretary of the Navy Josephus
Daniels, Washington. But Andrews did never presented. Navy Intelligence
reportedly conducted an unsuccessful search for the inventor. They
Andrews found that only bought chemicals familiar to high school
chemistry students.
It was assumed that Andrews had been bought or killed, his formula
removed.
Shortly after entering the United States in the Second World War, and oil became vital, a
International News Service reporter tracked down the elusive Andrews
living on a farm in Pennsylvania.
Andrews said he had renounced trying to promote its fuel because neither
United States nor Great Britain was concerned. He had not asked
money, nor wanted any.
He had forgotten the formula, he said, but would if the rebuilding
government he wanted. No one approached him so the formula went to the
serious with him in 1953.
Was this triumph of alchemist wasted or gigantic hoax?
No matter now. The field is still open to a revolutionary
breakthrough. Motivation is great. Fame and fortune await.
We may yet be saved by some tinkering genius unorthodox in his basement
coal dust and baking soda.
