Upon entering the terminal I was surprised to see not only a greeting Welsh, but a dinosaur. I arrived in the peninsula Valdes, the starting point of my recent trip to Patagonia and Antarctica.
Peninsula Valdes is isolated and arid but rich in wildlife. Elephant Seals lounging on the banks – the mother had to leave their young for the first time – and all at the ranch I saw rheas (ostrich), Maras (small rodents), European hares and Guanaco. I undertook a trip to a full day of the peninsula in the north where you can see killer whales at certain times, even if I do not have the opportunity at that time. At San Lorenzo, a private ranch, it is possible to see a significant colony of Magellanic penguins around 2000 that breed in what appeared to be good planning and community organizations. The Magellanic penguins come to late September and I had the chance to witness lots of females hatching their eggs, a little well-fed little fluffy gray chicks.
In Puerto Pyramides I'm headed on a zodiac in search of Southern Right Whales. En route, we were greeted by a pod of dolphins appeared dark intrigued by us. Shortly after, we saw a Southern Right and her calf – its immense size dwarfing our zodiac – not long after a whole clove spy who were jumps and show their caudal fins. Seeing so much in one day is exhilarating.
After leaving the peninsula I went down to Ushuaia where I was facing the sun and snow before entering the Antarctic Dream, my boat for my expeditionary cruise to Antarctica. Plain sailing it was and not experiencing the choppy waters of the Drake Passage, I opted for Dramamine to try to mitigate against the nausea of motion of the boat.
Brown-bowed Albatros, storm petrels and many other sea birds accompanied us as we crossed the passage to the South Shetland Islands. I spent the day watching movies (from the comfort of the cabin) and listen to Rodrigo briefings on wildlife of Antarctica.
After two days of blizzard I awoke to bright sunshine and the South Shetlands. Our first release of Zodiac was an experience incredible Aitcho wet landing on the island. Here, I was greeted by a colony of gentoo penguins, among them were a low jugular and brown skuas awaiting the right moment to steal a Penguin egg. I took over 140 photos on this level – it really pays to ensure that you have enough memory cards!
Suddenly, the guide urged us back to the zodiac and boat. Sun within minutes, was replaced by snow and minutes later a snowstorm. The weather changes so dramatically and one hand, you feel vulnerable yet on the other, feel safe in their hands and skills of the crew and guides.
Crossing Shetland South of the Antarctic Peninsula was also quite rough. I woke in the early hours of the morning when I almost get out of bed to see that we were traveling incredibly fast. An announcement came on the PA system a few hours later, we urge everyone to go to the dining room for a meeting important. Here, we talked about distress signal from the explorer and how we were of course to turn for help. Fortunately, two vessels were closer and were able to assist and ensure all passengers were safe.
Our itinerary changed due to weather and our next release in astrological zodiac is an evening cruise around Paradise Bay. Overnight in Antarctica is a blue night lasting only a few hours of about 11-2.
The next landing was at Port Lockroy on the Antarctic Treaty Historic Site, a British base. At Neko Bay I set foot on the Antarctic continent was an incredible feeling.
Cuverville Island was my favorite because we had perfect weather, incredible scenery and a huge colony of Gentoo penguins. The terrain was steep with the knee-deep snow and I rather wish I had cut a little on the fantastic food on board the Antarctic Dream – perhaps empanadas too! The glacier was active with a loud crash sound from time to time and the echo of small avalanches.
Here, we began our journey going back to Ushuaia to prepare ourselves for the Drake Passage and more bad weather. En route, we passed Deception Island, although there was too much ice pack to land on the island or swim in hot springs – Antarctica had suffered its harshest winter for years. The weather on the return journey was rough and most of us simply retired to our cabin to try to sleep with her.
Captain's final dinner was an impressive finishing the incredible adventure. While the trip was overshadowed by the time I was lucky – And grateful for – the quality of boat and crew.
